In the next few days the pro-life movement will be front and center in our nation, except for probably in the liberal press. Marches, conferences, rallies, and a few sermons will mark the anniversary of the passing of Roe v. Wade.
Father Stephen Imbarrato, who leads Project Defending Life, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, states the following:
As we pass through the coming days of various Life Marches leading to the big DC event, I would like everyone to answer this question for self reflection! What is the greatest sacrifice I have made in the last year to stop the killing of my unborn brothers and sisters? Then we can ask ourselves..."what greater sacrifice can I make this coming year to end abortion?"
He couldn't be more on the mark with his remarks. When I attended the march in Washington, DC, two years ago, my first reaction was that I wish we could bottle this energy and enthusiasm to stop abortion throughout the year. Another response was how awesome it was that so many young people were marching. Another fact that stood out was that the large majority of those marching were representing a Catholic church, Catholic school, or just displaying their Catholic faith.
This IS not only a Catholic issue. It's a Lutheran issue, a Methodist issue, an Evangelical issue, or whatever type of church one attends. In fact, it is not confined to any church or political party. Abortion is a moral issue, and that's it. Do people say that the murder of a born person is only a religious issue or one for certain political party to fight against? Everyone would agree that murder is a moral issue that is just wrong. We need to also not have any labels attached to abortion defining it with a particular group. It is just wrong.
It is time to diligently work all year long to stop abortion. Where does one start? One suggestion is to learn as much as possible about defending the pro-life position. Then make a point to discuss the issue with anybody once a week to start. Once the abortion topic is brought to light, it can be much easier for the pro-lifer to discuss it again. That's not saying that the attacks on the pro-life position will subside, but if someone is confident in the life message then they will be more experienced in refuting the pro-abortion view.
Another effective method to stop abortion is to pray in front of abortion facilities during the 40 Days for Life campaign or anytime for that matter. Fighting abortion through the legislative process is one way of achieving the goal of abortion, although it can be extremely frustrating. Ask God to apply your talents and gifts to best serve the fight against abortion. It is very possible that the gifts you have in a certain area could be used to stop abortion in a way that never occurred to you.
The bottom line is that the horror of abortion should be the number one issue not just one week out of the year, but every day of the year. It shouldn't be put on the back burner and then brought to the front in January, when the thought is, "Well, it's time to talk about abortion again."
