Filling A Void At Colleges - The Pregnant On Campus Initiative
Update: This was a post I published last month about The Pregnant on Campus Initiative presided over by Jon Scharfenberger. Jon, who is featured in the video below, passed away on October 18 from injuries he received in a car accident 10 days earlier.
When discussing the abortion issue on college campuses I often hear the students stating that there is a dilemma between choosing to abort their unborn baby or continuing their education. Many have very few resources to give them any hope of having the baby while continuing their studies. Often the woman states that she will lose her scholarship if she takes time off of school for awhile after she has her baby. I have heard numerous times that the day care costs will be so high that there is no way to support the child. Many women have told me that there is very little support on campus, such as day care, or other help after they have the baby. Unfortunately, the result is often the killing of the unborn in favor of keeping their current educational status and goals.
One organization has stepped forward to help fill the void.
The organization Students For Life Of America has recently developed The Pregnant on Campus Initiative for college campuses.
The mission of the Pregnant on Campus Initiative is twofold:
To provide a vision and plan to the campus pro-life groups across America for how to create sustainable student pro-life organizations by establishing service projects to help women and families on campus and in the community.
Reduce abortion rates on college campuses by creating service projects that your pro-life group can use and organize to provide essential resources for fellow students facing unplanned, crisis pregnancies.
The Pregnant on Campus Initiative gives some great ideas to get the ball rolling in this endeavor, such hosting a baby shower, meals for moms, diaper drives, informational kits, babysitting, and much more.
What is the reason for this initiative?
The Pregnant on Campus Initiative is a response to the stunning statistic that approximately 46% of abortions in America are performed on college-aged women. This comes from a study done by the Guttmacher Institute. When faced with an unintended or crisis pregnancy, many students feel forced to choose between continuing their education or raising their child. Too often, college campuses do not provide the necessary resources or environment that support pregnant and parenting students.
In the following video The Pregnant on Campus Coordinator, Jon Scharfenberger, went to a college to see if he could find pregnant or parenting resources on campus.
