The March
Once again the pro-life movement is engaging in several marches and rallies in numerous communities around the country. Of course, the largest is in Washington DC where approximately 300,000 march every year. On the surface that is awesome, but where are the results from so much support for the lives of the unborn? If this many people are marching and are representing quite a few more who can't attend one would think there would be many more positive results for the pro-life position.
The Results
The results seem to be small and incremental over the years. Parental notification here, fetal pain bill there, but no huge changes that has made much of a dent in the abortion rates. Why are the results so small for a seemingly large amount of support? The two main reasons are the pro-abortion views by almost all of the media and the use of semantics by those who favor abortion.
The Media
The liberal mainstream press, of course, follows the line of those who favor abortion and either never report on the issue or it's so slanted as to make pro-lifers appear as extreme nuts. What's very disappointing is that the conservative media isn't much better. Fox News, along with most conservative talk radio, is virtually void of discussing or criticizing abortion unless there is a predominate story in the news concerning it. Sometimes it's even more disconcerting to have the conservatives ignore it than to get the expected reaction from liberals.
The local news organizations aren't any better from what I have seen. They get the predictable and appropriate saddened look on their faces when they talk about animal abuse or are nearly in tears when there's a story about someone abandoning their baby. Unfortunately, the fact that unborn babies are killed in the House of Abortion right down the street is totally ignored.
Words, Words, Words
The use of words to describe one's position in our society is extremely powerful. The pro-abortion crowd, of course, calls themselves pro-choice, and choice is such a nice sounding word. Many pro-lifers have let them control the semantics of the issue without much of a fight at all. Often the first step to losing an issue is accepting the premise that the opposition has put forth. There are some who have tried for years to denounce choice and trumpet what abortion really is but, unfortunately, the media is the culprit again for not adopting any change of wording. The abortion advocates also use many other phrases that are picked up by those in the media and left unchallenged. Reproductive rights, women's health, women's rights, terminate the pregnancy, are just a few terms that are prevalent for those supporting the killing of the unborn. If we are pro-life, why can't they be called pro-death? Since we are against abortion shouldn't they regularly be called pro-abortion? Often when they are called anything but pro-choice they make such a fuss that many pro-lifers back down.
How do we solve the media and semantics problems?
Shouldn't we directly target the media? If they won't show up at the March For Life with 300,000 people or they inaccurately report on it, then let's take the march and rallies to them, both figuratively and literally. Why can't we inundate the newspaper or television station with the truth of abortion or have marches or rallies right in front of their offices? If not these approaches then something where they can't ignore the truth of abortion.
Every pro-lifer should start asking the pro-abortion folks what is meant by "choice" and get in meaningful conversations with those who claim to be pro-choice, are on the fence about the issue, or rarely even think about it. Let's change the nomenclature when it comes to this. Let's no longer accept the premise that it's choice, women's rights, etc. It's time we control the issue so that when nearly a million people march across the country this month then there are truly positive results with regard to saving the unborn babies.
Examine what has happened recently from President Obama and the Democrats. They have trashed everything from George W. Bush, the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, etc. for the last few years. But when they lose some power they then state how we (the conservatives) should have a new tone of civility across America. Many Americans go right along with it without analyzing what they really mean by civility. It's a tactic to shut the conservatives up. Of course, it won't be anywhere near as easy to get the masses to change their thinking of abortion from choice to killing but it can be done. Since most Americans are influenced so much by the media then that must be the target to expose the truth to the world. It just might be easier to break the media stranglehold on the abortion debate than it is to get most churches involved in the fight, but that's another story.
