Are You Deceived Into Thinking That You Are Pro-Life?

Are You Deceived Into Thinking That You Are Pro-Life?
By Bud Shaver

James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves...”

This is a very interesting passage that I believe strikes to the very core of Christianity today. There is a deception that can take place when we read our Bible or listen to sermons week after week. We can agree with what we read and hear but can deceive ourselves into thinking that we are faithful Christians. How do we really know if we are faithful Christians? James ends verse 22 by stating, “Do what it says.” We cannot simply read the Bible and deceive ourselves; we have to live out the words on those pages.

I think that the Pro-Life community mirrors this problem. We can hear all the arguments that establish the fact that life begins at conception and so abortion intentionally kills an innocent human person and is therefore wrong. We can agree with all the arguments but deceive ourselves into thinking that we are Pro-Life. We can claim that we are Pro-Life, but we are just deceiving ourselves if we do not do anything about it. How do we really know if we are Pro-Life? We must act Pro-Life.

“Apathetic” as defined in Cambridge dictionary is as follows: “Showing little or no interest; unwilling to take action, especially over something important.” Every 24 seconds, a mother will walk into an abortion clinic and murder her child. Over 3,500 children will be killed in America today due to the ultimate child abuse...Abortion. If that is not important or spur you into action, then you are apathetic. If you claim intellectually to be Pro-Life, but are unresponsive, then you are simply deceiving yourself.

12 million people were killed due to Germany’s Holocaust. These murders took place in remote concentration camps. The German people claimed to know nothing about this horrible atrocity. However history has judged them as complicit to these crimes, because they should have done something, anything to stop it. It took the Allied nations including the U.S.A. to end this horrible atrocity. When American troops liberated concentration camps, they gathered the German towns people and forced them to bury the bodies and help those who where dying of disease and starvation, because they did not accept their excuses.

Over 50 million children have died in America’s Holocaust. (Over four times as many as the German Holocaust.) These murders have taken place in the middle of our communities. Abortion clinics are located where we shop and get our groceries, they are next to restaurants, and they are across from churches and schools. There is no way that Americans can claim to know nothing about abortion. How will history judge you? What will you peacefully and prayerfully do to end this injustice? What will it take to move you into action in response to something this important? We cannot accept anymore excuses. Now is the time to stand for life...if not now, then when?

Bud, you are spot-on with your analysis. I would go further with your comparison with Nazi Germany. To stand and speak out was extremely dangerous and few had the courage. To save lives from the Nazi Holocaust was so difficult and, any attempt to do so, would put one's own life in danger. (see Dietrich Bonhoeffer who paid the ultimate price).

But there is little such danger for us modern residents of the abortion-rife West. Furthermore, there are many tried and tested ways that lives can be saved from abortion. The problem is finding the volunteers and the funding. There are plenty of so-called pro-lifers from the sidelines (tens of thousands on Facebook for example) but only a handful on the pitch, engaging with the public.

The silence of indifference to the plight of the unborn is deafening. And I don't know the answer, other than to keep going and to keep asking for volunteers.

If you think things are bad in the US, come and try the UK, the abortion capital of Europe!

So true, I have just started working with Project Defending Life here in Albuquerque, NM and I am amazed how important it is to have funding for helping women in difficult situations. Over the past two weeks we have had well over 10 turn-arounds and the key factor was actually having the resources to help these women. We are providing housing, cell phones, transportation, financial assistance and much more. We need Church leaders to re-evaluate their budgets and free up finances specifically for this urgent crisis. Speaking up is only the first step, there is so much more to be done after opening our mouths.

BTW, Are there free speech laws in the UK? Are you able to reach out at clinics legally?

Bud, yes and yes. Freedom of speech and freedom of public gathering. But there are certain restrictions such as not to incite a riot or cause offense. The latter being open to interpretation, of course. A few do reach out at abortion centres but not many.

We prefer to work in town and city centres which we consider to be very effective.
