What does abortion and Obama have in common? Both continue to destroy this country mainly because of apathy. In my opinion, 30-40% of Americans are not passionate about politics, so they just take a glancing interest in the news of the day from one of the liberal media outlets. During the last presidential campaign they really showed interest only about a month before and then voted for Obama because of some nebulous pronouncement of "hope and change" or because he's a minority. They either didn't know about Obama's past or they just didn't care. Then they went back to their daily lives of not caring about current events or politics until the next election rolls around. That's the only reason one can explain the electing of Obama and his current approval numbers of 46%. There shouldn't be any way that 46% agree with what Obama is doing. Everything he has tried has failed often because of the actions of the politically active at town hall meetings or Tea Party rallies. Granted, many of them were not politically active before the inauguration of Obama, but there is still a sizable chuck of the populace that doesn't have any desire to be involved even though unemployment figures are skyrocketing, housing sales have plumetted, and many local business are shutting down.
Many of the apathetic Democratic supporters are union members who are safe in their jobs with stable salaries. Since they feel that their jobs are secure there is no pressing need to fight for anyone else. When elections do come up they figure that the best way is to vote for whoever the union endorses. Guess what? That means some smooth talking shallow liberal politician with little experience can become president. What Obama really is can be explained in one common denominator with unions - thuggery. Just look how he responds to any person or group who defies him. He tries to destroy them and many are just too afraid to stand up to him and his cohorts. The list of who he has demonized is a mile long but basically it is anyone who is in the way of his "control" agenda or anybody who negatively analyzes what he is doing. It seems evident that most of the 46% who support him would never want one of their family members, friends, or associates to act the way that Obama does toward people or ever think of having the friends that he has. But they are willing to have him run this country and represent us abroad.
How does the apathy toward politics relate to the abortion issue? Many of these same apathetic citizens avoid the abortion issue like a plague. They don't have any inclination to even think about it because, I believe, it will result in them coming face-to-face with the truth about their beliefs. It's much easier to ignore the issue then have to think that their view of abortion might be wrong. In the latest polls those who thought abortion should be always legal or usually legal was averaging around 55%. The apathetic ones don't pay much attention to the issue, and when they do hear anything about abortion in the news it's presented as a pro-abortion viewpoint. Also, the mainstream media has portrayed anybody opposing abortion as right-wing extremists. Many of the apathetic crowd want to be thought of as nice and understanding which translates into liberal beliefs.
What is the origin of much of this apathy? Especially for those growing up in the 1950s to the 1970s there was that old adage that one doesn't discuss politics and religion. For many the abortion issue falls into both categories so it's expressly off limits. It seems that many people who promote that "off limits" view really aren't confident in their beliefs of either politics or religion. If they are confident, they just don't want to hurt anyone's feelings with an opposing viewpoint. Many of these people passed this belief to their children, but thankfully some of the youth today have gone against their parent's wishes.
What's the solution? There needs to be interaction with the apathetic population and explain to them how important politics and current events are to their lives. They need to watch or listen to alternatives to the liberal press so they will have both sides of an issue. Finally, abortion must come to the forefront of our daily lives. It cannot be a hidden topic because someone feels comfortable in their own apathetic view of society.
Many of the apathetic group may see Obama and abortion as ruining our country but they often use the "benefit of the doubt" reasoning to explain both. Even when Obama continues to shove his agenda down our throats, they still think he is trying to make life better for Americans. Similarly, those same people often give the "pro-choicers" the benefit of the doubt because they feel if someone is for a person's choice then it can't be wrong. Obama continues to have an extreme pro-abortion record which many Americans do not scrutinize because of their apathy for politics and abortion. This apathy needs to stop now so we can eliminate the death of millions of innocent babies and prevent the thugs from running American into the ground.

Monte, thanks for explaining your perspective on this. It's helpful to someone like me who is unfamiliar with politics in the US.
I'm interested in solutions so that we can make positive progress in reducing the number of abortions. I'm interested in action not inaction. I was never very happy sitting on committees or seminars or conferences if it was all talk and no action.
You asked "What's the solution? There needs to be interaction with the apathetic population..."
I think you are absolutely right. Interaction with people, face to face, is how we will make substantial progress. As pro-lifers, we need to find more ways to do this. I believe we need to put aside much of our reliance on modern methods of communication, such as radio, TV, facebook, blogs, forums etc which all fail to have this face to face interaction that is so essential.
Now this is an immense challenge to anyone with pro-life conviction because it means leaving personal comfort zones and addressing apathy amongst our own ranks. Regular face to face interaction requires much more than signing a petition, joining an annual march, commenting on a blog or facebook from your armchair laptop.
Relatively few pro-lifers get up and get out there - where it really counts. I hope more folks will rise to the task, shaking off their own inaction and challenging the apathy of others to the plight of the unborn.
Alan - Very good points.
