What I Would Ask Barack Obama

Barack Obama was in my area today for a town hall meeting. I have been thinking about what I would ask him if I had the chance. Here it goes:

From your actions and beliefs, it's apparent that you are one of the most pro-torture people in the United States. Yes, you are a strong proponent of torture in the name of abortion for unborn babies and by your actions and words, even some born babies. Why do you believe in this type of torture that tears the unborn limb by limb, burns it, sucks it though a tube, or other methods until it dies?
You went overseas and criticized America or never defended it when leaders of other countries were verbally destroying us. Why didn't you point out all the great things we have done in our short history?

You said that we aren't a Christian nation, although the documents and words from our founding fathers show that the birth of our nation was based on Christian principles. Your administration also called those who believe in end times and the pro-life view as possible terrorists. Why do have such animosity against Christians that are 77% of our population?

You say that you want to have abortion rare, but if someone wants to have one, it's their choice. If the practice is acceptable enough that you think people should have it done, why should it be rare?

Why do you, your administration, and your media attempt to discredit or destroy anyone who disagrees with you: Joe the plumber, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and her family, Chrysler investors, Fox News, small businesses, etc.?

Why did you say that you didn't want your daughters punished with a baby?

Should your mother have aborted you? Why not? If you shouldn't have been aborted, why should others?

If there was such an urgency about the stimulus bill that it had to be passed before anyone had time to read it, why is our economy still having major problems?

Do we really have a national health care crisis? I'm sure there are individual crisis situations, but locally if they don't have insurance, they would go to our university hospital and pay on a sliding scale or get it free. If there is a crisis situation in America, then it seems I would encounter people at every turn who couldn't get insurance.

Capitalism and individual freedom have been the cornerstones of the greatness of America. Why do you want to destroy these principles in favor of socialism that has had a very poor track record?

Well I'm not the President but I'll have a shot at answering your questions.

"...You are a strong proponent of torture in the name of abortion for unborn babies and by your actions and words, even some born babies."

Nope. Non-provision of life-support care is not torture. Neither are any abortions as currently done. If this question means why am I pro-choice see below.

You went overseas and criticized America or never defended it when leaders of other countries were verbally destroying us. Why didn't you point out all the great things we have done in our short history?

"Verbally destroying us"? What does that mean? If I've been "destroyed" why am I still here? If I haven't been destroyed what does the phrase "verbally destroy" mean? Did you watch the original Star Trek series? Remember when Scotty says "We're big enough to take a few insults"? There's a time to talk and a time to listen, to everyone.

"You said that we aren't a Christian nation, although the documents and words from our founding fathers show that the birth of our nation was based on Christian principles.... Why do have such animosity against Christians that are 77% of our population?

Have you forgotten that Barack Obama is a church-going Christian? Maybe you should see a neurologist. Anyway, a Christian majority does not make a country a Christian country. Nor does living according to principles DERIVED FROM Christianity (and from pre-Christianity).

"Your administration also called those who believe in end times and the pro-life view as possible terrorists. "

To answer this, google Reverend John Burt, also David Koresh.

"You say that you want to have abortion rare, but if someone wants to have one, it's their choice. If the practice is acceptable enough that you think people should have it done, why should it be rare?"

In order to keep right-to-lifers happy. Seriously, if getting drunk is acceptable enough that you think people should be allowed to do it, why should IT be rare? My answer to your question is the same as your answer to mine.

"Why do you, your administration, and your media attempt to discredit or destroy anyone who disagrees with you: Joe the plumber, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and her family, Chrysler investors, Fox News, small businesses, etc.?"

"Why did you say that you didn't want your daughters punished with a baby?"

Because I don't. Being forced to grow a pregnancy and birth against your will at age 13 IS a punishment.

"Should your mother have aborted you?

No.

"Why not?"

Because she didn't want to.

"If you shouldn't have been aborted, why should others?"

Because others are inside the bodies of yet others, where they are not welcome. Because others are using the bodily life-support functions of those yet-others, against their wills.

"If there was such an urgency about the stimulus bill that it had to be passed before anyone had time to read it, why is our economy still having major problems?"

These things take time. Also, Obama has been quite frank about the fact that the stimulus may not fix the economy. It may not be enough, or the economy may be beyond fixing. It's not like GWBush who inherited a government on the right side of the ledger and a humming economy. (It shrank a tiny bit, a blip on the huge climb, a bit of noise and the GOP whined about a "recession"). When Obama took office the economy was down, rapidly getting worse, and the rate at which it was getting worse was increasing, rapidly. An infinitely-differentiable sh*t-storm!

"Do we really have a health care crisis? I've never known anyone in a health care crisis situation."

You must move in exclusive circles.

"If they didn't have insurance, they would go to our local university hospital and pay on a sliding scale or get it free. If it is a crisis situation, then it seems I would encounter people at every turn who couldn't get insurance."

I don't either but most of my friends and associates have good jobs or are students.

"Capitalism and individual freedom have been the cornerstones of the greatness of America. Why do you want to destroy these principles in favor of socialism that has had a very poor track record?"

Obama doesn't want to do this. Whatever gave you the idea that he did?

Anyway, your premise is stupid. The cornerstone of the greatness of America is technological superiority. The large majority of new technological successes in USA since the 1930s owe just as much to government (dare I say the word) investment as to private investment ("capitalism and individual freedom"). What would the auto industry have been without public roads? The materials-science field without spinoffs from the Space Program? In biotech the private companies all benefit from public investment in basic science which the companies improve and market, from employees trained on government grants to universities, from startup grants, and from market-support, selling ideas for products useful to government-supported scientists.

Correct long-term-planned use of the various NON-PROFIT science budgets is at least as essential to USA's greatness as capitalism is.

President Obama's appointments of Steve Chu and Eric S. Lander show that he understands what's happening very well. Lander is one of the two best-qualified people in the world to hasten and maximize the benefits of the genome stuff.

Oops, I forgot to answer the question about discrediting opponents.

It's hard to take this question seriously but I'll try. I personally am surprised by how gently Obama is treating his enemies. I guess he might be waiting for the dust to settle over Franken's Senate seat. I hope that's what it is.

For instance. The Catholic Church hierarchy declared war on him before he became a candidate and their prosecution of that war has been limited only by their fear of losing tax-exempt status. Maybe the President should consider having the Attorney General issue an arrest warrent for Cardinal Bernard Law on charges of accessory to child-molestation by priests. (Law is currently hiding out in Vatican City.) I bet the Padres would get the message.

I did some time in med school in the late 1990s and early 2000s and everyone, absolutely everyone I met in the biz (except some in the Veteren's Administration which was well-funded, elderly veterens being a significant fraction of the state's population) had stories of patients they personally had seen who had been bankrupted by being uninsured or underinsured. Like you lose your home, car, etc. to a traffic accident or a heart attack or a sports injury. Or, you have something like diabetes and lose a leg or some of your vision or the feeling in your hands because you can't afford to control your blood-sugar.

Anyway, we're also in an early stage of a long-term crisis in health care. The baby boomers will soon be majority over-sixty. If you don't think that's a crisis you don't know what a crisis is.
