I admire those who wish to stand up for their beliefs. However, I am curious as to why there was not a similar response to George W. Bush speaking at Commencement since he is a supporter of the death penalty, which is also condemned by the Catholic Church. Are these students "cafeteria Catholics"?
Greetings Anonymous, Please don't confuse the two issues. The death penalty is not condemned per se by the Church, However the Church does stress that cases for the death penalty should be "rare" in protection of the common good. Please see the following link for the official teaching of the Church. (CCC paragraphs 2265-2267)
